The Struggle to Find Natural Solutions

After my lumpectomy, my doctor recommended wearing a breast prosthesis made with natural fibres. Easier said than done—I couldn’t find one anywhere.

Eventually, I settled for a “puff” prosthesis with a polyester outer shell and fill, plus a cotton layer against the skin. But it wasn’t comfortable.

• It didn’t breathe, causing me to overheat, sweat, and experience hot flashes.

• Worst of all, it moved around in my bra.

I knew I needed to find a better solution.

 

A Shocking Discovery

As I researched other options, I was alarmed to learn how many chemicals and toxins are used in the materials that touch our skin daily. This revelation made me wonder: could some of our illnesses be caused by what we wear?

 

Research and the Challenge

My search continued for two years. I visited countless specialty stores for mastectomy bras and products, searching for natural alternatives.

One specialist, after hearing my struggles, said, “Make your own—good luck with that.”

I took that as a challenge.

 

What I Wanted in a Breast Prosthesis

I set out to create a prosthesis that:

• Was made primarily from natural materials

The First Prototype

I reached out to a natural fibre mill, which provided me with materials to test. Using my polyester puff prosthesis as a model, I dusted off my sewing machine and crafted a rudimentary, handmade version.

• Reduced hot flashes and overheating.
• My breast skin stayed cool and comfortable.
• The prosthesis didn’t develop unpleasant odors between washings.

I realized I was onto something.
