Keeping it Cool: the Relief of Thermoregulation

"Outside, she thought that there ought to be a word for it: the air temperature that was perfectly neither hot nor cold. One degree lower, and she might have felt a faint misgiving about not having brought a jacket. One degree higher, and a skim of sweat might have glistened at her hairline. But at this precise degree, she required neither wrap nor breeze. Were there a word for such a temperature, there would have to be a corollary for the particular ecstasy of greeting it - the heedlessness, the needlessness, the suspended lack of urgency, as if time could stop, or should. Usually temperature was a battle; only at this exact fulcrum was it an active delight.”
― Lionel Shriver, The Post-Birthday World

When I hear about thermoregulation in materials, I often think of gear meant for extreme activities like mountain climbing or exploring exotic forests. While you may not be hiking to the top of Kilimanjaro or trekking through the humid rainforest of the Amazon, as you know, living in North America can be challenging due to the extreme weather conditions, whether you're indoors or outdoors. It can be tough to feel comfortable throughout the day, especially when battling freezing winter temperatures and dealing with heat pumps, sweltering hot summer days and air conditioning.

I know how important it is to feel at ease no matter what environment you find yourself in. That's why I used thermoregulating materials when I designed the Comfort 'n' Confidence™ all-natural external breast prostheses.

These all-natural materials are designed to regulate your body temperature, reducing the risk of feeling too hot or too cold. They also help wick away moisture from your skin, preventing skin irritation and infection while promoting overall skin health. You can rest assured that your comfort and well-being are my top priorities.

Alpaca fleece is a natural fibre known for its excellent thermoregulatory properties. Alpaca fleece and felt can be considered thermoregulating materials. Here's how alpaca fleece and felt contribute to thermoregulation:

Insulation: Alpaca fleece has unique hollow fibres that provide excellent insulation. These fibres create pockets of air that help trap warmth in cold conditions, keeping you cozy. Conversely, in hot conditions, the hollow fibres allow air to circulate and prevent overheating.

Moisture Management: Alpaca fleece has moisture-wicking properties, which can absorb and release moisture efficiently. It can wick away sweat from the body, keeping you dry and preventing discomfort. This moisture management helps regulate body temperature by preventing excessive heat buildup.

Breathability: Alpaca fleece allows for better airflow than many other fibres. This breathability helps regulate temperature by allowing excess heat and moisture to escape, keeping you comfortable in varying conditions.

The outer shell of the Comfort 'n' Confidence™ all-natural external breast prosthesis is also thermoregulating. It consists of 66% rayon from bamboo, 28% cotton, and 6% spandex. The combination of rayon from bamboo, cotton, and spandex in this fabric blend offers a balance of moisture-wicking properties, breathability, and stretch. It can help manage moisture by wicking away sweat and facilitating quick evaporation, contributing to a more comfortable body temperature.

Whether it is hot or cold, you will be comfortable when you wear the Comfort 'n' Confidence™ all-natural external breast prosthesis.
