Will Insurance cover this?
Designing and making the innovative Comfort ‘n’ Confidence™ all-natural external breast prosthesis was just the tip of the iceberg for me. I realised very early on that in order for us to be taken seriously and make it available to as many women as possible, I needed to make it "legit." To me, that meant having it classified as a medical device, and I am proud to say our all-natural external breast prosthesis is Health Canada-approved as a Class 1 medical device.
What does that mean for you?
As a Class 1 medical device, it is tax-free across Canada. You may already know this; in Canada, breast prostheses are generally covered under most private and provincial health insurance plans as a medically necessary item for women who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy as part of their breast cancer treatment.
It's worth noting that breast prostheses are usually covered up to a certain amount, and if the cost of the prosthesis exceeds this amount, patients may need to pay out-of-pocket for the difference. Patients can consult their healthcare providers or breast prosthesis suppliers to find out what options are available to them.
Overall, breast prosthesis coverage is generally available in Canada, but it's important to check with your private and provincial health insurance plan to confirm the specific level of coverage available from your provider and in your region.
